‘Be a good listener, your ears will never get you in trouble’

‘Be a good listener, your ears will never get you in trouble’. Frank Tyger

You’re fortunate if you have sharp ears that pick up conversations around you! Most of us spend our lives wanting to speak our messages to the world and fail to listen to the people around us or even observe whats happening. While on the other hand some of us prefer to be quiet listeners. It can prove worthwhile in the long term.

Now you’re wondering what is a secretary writing about ‘listening’ skills! Well most of my job is listening – listening on the phone to customers, listening to tape transcriptions and typing what I hear. Since taking on transcription service more than 10 years ago I have grown to love what I do – listening to voices through the headphones. Day by day I receive audio recordings through SendThisFile or Drop Box or You Send It websites. Some are small files of 1-2 minutes or longer files of 1 – 2 hour recordings. Videos can also be converted to audio files.

Its an interesting job being a transcriptionist. I have listened to tons of different recordings from people around the world on different topics. Obviously it makes my job easier to listen to a well articulated, clear recording on an interesting topic. Besides clear recordings, I have transcribed noisy recordings in meetings, conferences, group interviews, which may take a bit longer to transcribe. I learn something new each time. Its also important to be knowledgeable on many topics and terminologies – like world issues, politics, education, legal, medical, scientific, general business topics, etc.

Best regards!
